This posts details about the procedure to get the driving license extract from RTO office in Virugambakkam, Chennai.

What you need?

> A requisition letter addressed to the Asst License Authority clearly stating why you need a driving license extract.
> Photocopy of your Driving License (Both front and back in a single page)
> Rs 5 court fee Stamp - can be purchased at the shop near to RTO office.
> Original DL needs to be handy.

This is how the court fee stamp looks like:

How to reach?

First things first, how to reach the RTO office: feel free to use the URL below and update your starting point it should give you an idea of how to reach.

Google Map of RTO Chennai-Southwest

BTW, share autos are readily available and they take 10 INR from opposite to Koyambedu Police Station to reach the RTO office as on July 25, 2017.

What Next?

Affix the stamp on the top right corner of your requisition letter (R.L hereafter for convenience) underneath the date.
Staple the photocopy of your driving license along with this R.L and be ready.
Take the stairs and reach to the first floor of the RTO office and look for the very first counter on to your right side. You are lucky if you have a short queue for this counter.
Please submit the requisition letter and tell the officer that you need a driving license extract for applying a foreign D.L. (Or whatever your reason is.)
Upon checking your R.L and verification, the officer might direct you to pay the fees ( INR 90) if all is ok, else you might get new instructions to follow.
After paying your fees, you will get 2 copies of your receipt. One of that needs to be affixed on the R.L and handed over at the last counter. Keep the other one for your reference.
You will be asked to come back in 2 days to collect the extract, usually it is around 5 p.m.

That is all folks.

How to restore folders back when all folders are shown as shortcuts in external pen drive

I got my Pen Drive infected with some virus which changed all the folders to shortcuts. I am just showing you one folder as example to fix....I tried to scan with avast and Malware Bytes anti-malware, it found couple of threats and even after deleting them, there was no change, so i am giving you steps to restore your data...

Please follow the screenshots one by one.....this worked for me, hope it works for you too...cheers

Before starting these steps please enable " Show hidden files, folders and drives " from the folder options in Control Panel.

Following is the infected folder which contains data but it shows as shortcut, please right click on the shortcut icon and click on properties you will see like the one below...

the part which says target is important, mine said  %windir%\system32\cmd.exe /C start "" "L:\karthik\" && start "" "42a9517_l.exe" Also there is no such partition as L: in my system, the partition name of my pen drive is G: as you can see below.

All you have to do is to erase the target in the first screen shot and type is as G:\karthik....please see image below.

Click Apply and and then OK. After doing this, you will now be able to double click the shortcut and will be able to see the contents of the folder. And once you are inside this folder right click on the empty space and open properties and click customize tab on it and then click on change icon...

Select the folder that I have selected as down below. Click OK followed by Apply and then OK again.

Now you will be able to see a hidden folder along with the infected shortcut, this will be your original data... Last step is to right click on the hidden folder and make it visible and delete the shortcut icon from the pen drive.
Note:- Please Select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files.

Please make sure you delete the shortcut icon and not your original data folder, it happens when you are trying to play smart and accidentally it goes wrong... happened to me once :-)

Hope this works...

Thanks

Transcripts from Anna University

Recently I went to Anna University to apply for transcripts on 6th Aug 2012. I would like to update the procedure so as to help those who are trying to get one. The official procedure from Anna University makes itself pretty clear, this can be found following this link:- PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING TRANSCRIPTS. However, I am going to make it further easier for all.

Please follow these steps in the same order and it works like a charm and avoids unnecessary hassles.

Step 1:- Decide how many transcripts would you be needing. Cost of one set of transcript is 500/- INR. Multiply your set of transcripts number with 500 and get a DD for that amount.

Step 2:- I needed 2 sets, so I got a DD from SBI for Rs. 1000/- in favor of  "Controller of Examinations, Anna University, Chennai-25" ( make sure this is written completely on the DD ) payable at Chennai.

Step 3:- Photocopies of the following is mandatory, it is better to get 2 copies with you.
  1. Degree Certificate ( Front and Back )
  2. Consolidated Mark Sheet ( Front and Back ) on A3 Paper- Make sure it has the entire thing same as the original.
  3. 10th Mark List ( For CBSE Students )/ 12th Mark List ( For State Board )- This is the proof for your Date Of Birth, no other docs are accepted.
Step 4:- No need of individual mark sheets. But I would suggest to keep one set of copy with you. A Passport size Photo is needed which will be scanned on the right hand corner of your transcripts.

Step 5:- An A3 Size Cover to contain the originals and the photocopies for submission.

Step 6:- The second left entrance ( when you are travelling from Raj Bhavan towards Anna University ) is the campus from where you have to get these. This building comes prior to Director of Technical Education Campus. You can contact the receptionist, she will guide you with the exact location of the department.

Step 7:- When you reach the right department and upon showing all your documents you will be provided with the application.

Step 8:- Fill it accordingly and attach all the documents( Originals, photocopies, DD and photo ). Your Name, Registration No, and your Mobile No has to be written on the reverse side of DD and your photo.

Step 9:-  You will be informed a date on which you can get back your transcripts. Make a note of the application number and the contact no ( 044-22357245 ) before you move out of the campus.

Step 10:- On the aforesaid date, it would be fine if you can call and confirm before you go, it will save you unnecessary frustrations. You don't need to carry any adhesives, since the cover which they provide has a peel of sticker and the official seal on it, all you have to do is verify your transcripts and receive your originals without fail after signing a received-form, secure the cover and leave the place.

NOTE:- You don't have to fill the application given from the University's link, since it doesn't contain the application number, they have a printed application form with them. As of now, it takes ~10 days to get your transcripts, so hurry up if you are one of those who does something in the nick of the time. And by the way my next post tells about the procedure of getting Medium Of Instruction Certificate from Anna University. Unfortunately those guys didn't accept my request for getting  the MOI Certificate on the same day.

Cheers Everyone.

Better use of communication

Almost all the universities/colleges has an international service desk with them. We can contact them directly and get help. I sent an email to the id mentioned in that asking for the point of contact in India. I am talking about university in Latvia here. They directed me towards a consultancy in Chennai and to my surprise they charge 65,000 INR for the entire process of admission which includes the VISA charges and some other charges, which I didn't cared to remember. I don't know about others, but I am very much against paying money to anyone who claims to get the job done (until there is no other way of getting the job done). The very first point of paying them for consultation and admission made me rethink and when I got an info from the contact abroad that there is high unemployment issue, I decided not to apply.

Stopping digression, I have a Skype Id with me which I use for office communication mainly. I thought of searching through contacts who are already in Estonia in majority of the social networking sites. I want to tell you one thing here, I am not much inclined to social networking, so my search were clearly restricted to FB and LinkedIn. Then I suddenly remembered skype, and I thought why shouldn't I search for someone from Estonia and get some advice from them. I did find many contacts and then I filtered the contacts according to my convenience. Say for example, people from Estonia who has been migrated to other countries, I didn't prefer to contact them. I had a common message for all the requests it went something like this.

Hi xxxxxxxx! I’d like to add you on Skype. I am planning to do my higher studies in xxxxx, looking for some information about life in xxxxx. Hope you can help me with this. Thanks in Advance xxxxxxxx."

You know, not many contacted me in return. Some people who contacted me, gave me an idea about life there. Also I looked for advises from many blogs especially travel blogs etc. Surprisingly, I got in touch with someone from India and that too he was from the same univ to which I have been planning to apply.
I would seriously advice to anyone who is willing to do anything at all, to make better use of the internet, it is not only for getting knowledge, but you don't know whom you will get in touch with sometimes who can turn the tables for you.

Cheers to all who are planning to study abroad.

Search for an University

Now that I have decided to study abroad, I have to search for an university that could take me. Of course the first priority is towards arranging funds for college, but I will leave that to a separate post. Since there was no opportunity of me getting into USA or Australia, main reason being, I have to show ~20 Lacs in my account. I totally can't afford that. Here, I would like to tell you about one of my friend who is happily married and living in Sweden. She shifted my mind towards EU. She is one of the great contributor in my decision for taking up studies abroad. I wanna thank her for that, and I certainly owe her. She is an recent immigrant to Sweden and she persuaded me in taking up Masters in Sweden. She also told me that Sweden was free of tuition fee in Universities up until 2011. Damn, I thought, I missed the opportunity of getting a degree free of cost. Now, when I was planning to go to Sweden for studies, the tuition fee when converted to Indian Rupee reaches ~18-20 Lacs. This clearly is beyond my budget.
Well, the majority of the world has literally kicked me out in getting a foreign degree. I never quit searching the internet to look for any university (I am gonna call Univ hereafter, don't ask my why.) wherein the fee is affordable. I stumbled upon an education consultant who directed me towards Latvia. I also got an assurance that compared to other countries of the world, this place has comparatively lower tuition fee. Hmm...this looked promising until I found a person from the same univ telling me not to join. I will surely blog about this person and how I met him( Better Use of Communication ). The main reason being unemployment. There, Latvia kicked me out too. I was not disheartened. I asked him to suggest me some place else.
He suggested me to look for Estonia. I have heard of that place in my history classes. I clearly remember seeing this place when I was looking through the universities in Latvia. But back then I ignored it. May be because I was too scared to imagine myself in a new place not known to me. I started googling about Estonia. First thing that attracted me was that the Skype was developed here, I never knew that. Further browsing through loads of web pages gave me most of the times some positive things about this country. I thought its time to meet someone from this place (BUoC) to get to know about this place better.

Cheers

A Desire to Study Abroad

Like many Indians(???) I too have a desire to settle abroad. I love the western lifestyle, I had been thinking this for quite sometime (actually for years) now. I had an opportunity to visit US once, it was a business trip and I was greatly influenced by the life there. The place where I went was not a rush-hour city, at-least it was not a city of mayhem. People being extra-ordinary friendly and leading a peaceful life (at least that is what I saw mostly). It was a real short-trip lasting only for a month. When I was back in Chennai, I had to go through some real tough times in my office(not so nostalgic), but I won't deny saying there were some real fun moments and I really got a great load of friends there. One of them ended being my roomy.

Let me come to the point, I decided to quit and look for some other job. I have a buddy, we go long back to 15 yrs or so, who is in Australia now and I would very often receive calls from him describing the life abroad. I thought, may be I should try getting a job abroad, and who knows, may be that is where my future awaits. By the time I thought of  looking for work abroad. The Australian Work Visa has been stopped for that year. I didn't care to research the reason behind it, heard about recessions and presumed that would be an apt reason. I don't want to quote USA here, since by the time I am writing this, it was real tough to even think of getting a work VISA.

I am not the kind of guy who does great in academics, I am an average student. It doesn't matter, whether you get a foreign degree or not, the moment you are registered to a foreign university, you become the star in the eyes of your surrounding. Relatives/Neighbors  in India hold a unique respect to one who is a foreign-return or is in abroad. I thought may be I should be earning some of that respect. Since I have quit now, I was seriously thinking of doing something worth my lifetime.

Here starts my journey of studying abroad.

Should I be even worried, since I have started this on Friday the 13th.
